I was the one who just asked for advice about being nervous about joining. I have never played, so they will probably put me on the C team. I'm not sure how other players think of the new players. They said at my age, they don't explain how to play. How can I teach myself? Also, what should I be able to do in the pool like how many laps or something?

Theres nothing wrong about being on the C team when you’re first starting out, but just try your best to stand out by  working the hardest to improve. And in all honesty, especially in a boy’s team, the older guys usually don’t give a shit about the new players, unless you’re their friend.

You should try watching all their games, and actually ask questions. I have to admit, I played all through out high school and didn’t truly understand the game until my third year. Yeah, I knew how to tread and shoot, but the actual workings of the game take awhile to truly understand, unless you ask questions. Which was one of my biggest faults.

And theres no “right” amount that you’re supposed to be swimming everyday. All coaches are different, but train yourself with maybe being able to complete a 500, then try and beat your time every new time. Also work on sprints, and having stamina between them because in games, you’re going to be randomly sprinting, treading, and defending all at high speeds.

I want to join my city's water polo club. But, I'm really nervous (I'm a guy). I'm not comfortable in a speedo. How can I be more comfortable in one? And how should i get in shape? how do i know when i'm in good enough shape? I'm also scared that everybody beats on the new guy.

First off, you shouldn’t be nervous in a speedo! Everyone else has to wear them, just try and be comfortable in your own skin. If you think about it, you are most likely the only one that is nervous about wearing one.

There are jammers too, thats an alternative, but they all kind of look the same to me personally. Use your insecurity as a drive to maybe lose that extra weight and be a motivator. I was honestly really insecure at first, but being surrounded by everyone else who seemed to be naturally comfortable helped.

I would recommended SWIMMING, SWIMMING, SWIMMING. Also, having a healthier diet is a lot of the problem if you don’t eat so well. In polo, your stamina needs to be high, so if you swim for long distances, it will help. Also, at my school, a lot of the guys had to do strength training, so they did hundreds of push ups, sit ups, and even ran.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone truly reaches their “good enough shape” level, because there is always improvement. When you get to the point when you feel like you can tread water with ease, and swim at various speeds, I would say you’re ready. You have to remember, you’re not going to be playing a full game your first day, so progress is gradual.

And, don’t worry about those guys!!! You’re most likely not going to be the only new guy. Just act comfortable, and slowly get to know your teammates. Don’t be awkward. Come off anon if you’d like to talk more :)

I played water polo when I was like in 5th grade now im in 9th and im thinking about joining my school's water polo team but I suck really badly now what can I do to get back in shape in order to play for the spring season.

Well first off, don’t think of yourself as sucking! You’ll definitely need to start to get into swimming shape. So, intervals are the best. And running, and weights helps as well with your stamina. Are you on the team right now? Or joining next year?
